Sound of Metal: Sound Design Analysis

Sound Design Analysis Movies have a way of making us feel as if we were in the world. It takes place, experiencing everything from joy to grief through the eyes of our main character. But how would that same type of film work if our main character were deaf? Directed by Darius Marder is The Sound of Metal. We follow the story through the lens of a young rock band member called Ruben Stone, who experiences a loss when it comes to hearing, which leads to the main plot Point of the movie. Having won an academy award for both best film editing, and best sound, this movie dives deep into the, now completely upside-down, life of our lead.     It's definitely not difficult to see why this movie has won so many awards, but the one that seems to stand out is its win of the best sound, especially when considering that our main character is deaf. Mise-en-Scene Analysis A musical held dear in the hearts of many throughout the world is The Nightmare Before Christmas. Released in 1993, this dark musical fantasy film was directed by Henry Selick and produced by none other than Tim Burton. This tells the tale of our main character, Jack Skellington, and how he planned to overtake Christmas because he was bored with his usual Halloween routine. Throughout the movie, we learn that Jack actually meant to take over this holiday so that he and his neighbors could experience happiness. Along with giving "Sandy Claws" a break, it ended up causing distress for both the citizens of Christmas-town and Halloween-town. Henry and Burton definitely made sure that the film they were creating would be unique, gothic, dark, and especially grotesque. Birdman: Cinematography Analysis

     Cinematography Analysis of Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)  Throughout this incredible exploration of camera angles and cinematography,  Birdman shows us how well-developed films can leave the viewer stunned, and throughout this film, we see everything through Riggan's (our main character) eyes; almost as if we were him,- the voice inside his head included. Throughout the production of this film, the deeply embedded themes played a crucial part in the visual design and cinematography as the story progressed.
